Programs in libraries are stepped up whenever local directors know that students will be out of school.

The Ballston Spa Public Library at 21 Milton Ave. will be hopping, beginning with the village winter festival Saturday. Director Virginia Humphrey said the library will offer crafts and show videos for kids from 1 to 4 p.m.

On Tuesday and Friday, children in grades one through four will have the opportunity to read to an always patient listener, Sophie the dog.
