FED: AMA will update GST manual on AIDS tests

The Australian Medical Association says it will update its GST manual to correct information
on the impact of the new tax on HIV tests.

The manual suggests the GST will apply to tests for the detection of human immunodeficiency
virus -- which was the case when the manual was produced.

However, amendments made to the GST laws during negotiations in late December have
ensured these tests won't be subject to GST as long as they are performed for health-related
reasons.

The AMA says the GST will apply if the tests are conducted for non-health-related reasons
such as insurance, immigration or other licencing purposes.

The AMA has urged doctors to make further inquiries about whether the material in the
manual is correct and current.

AMA president DAVID BRAND says a dedicated GST section of the association's website
will be up and running on February 15.
