Fed: Costello pays tribute to Jeannie Ferris
CANBERRA, April 2 AAP - Treasurer Peter Costello has paid tribute to South Australian
Liberal senator Jeannie Ferris, who lost her battle with cancer last night.
Mr Costello said today Senator Ferris, who was suffering from ovarian cancer, had been
a valuable worker over many years.
She was elected to the Senate in 1996 and was appointed government whip in 2002.
"I first met her when she was working for the (National) Farmers Federation. I was
also a counsel for the Farmers Federation," Mr Costello told the National Press Club in
Canberra.
He said Senator Ferris regarded the passage of therapeutic cloning legislation as among
the greatest achievements of her time in parliament.
"She'll be sorely missed and I want to send my condolences to her family," Mr Costello said.
Senator Ferris died peacefully in hospital in Canberra last night, where she has been
supported by family and friends during the past few weeks.
She was 66.
